Buddhist Text: The Story Of The Lotus Flower
By Lauren Cho
The lotus flower is a beautiful thing
With pink and white petals and green leaves,
Elegant and pristine and pure like spring,
A symbol of enlightenment, many believe.
People say that when Buddha was born
He was blessed by seven lotus flowers
That bloomed to bestow happiness and adorn
His life ahead with meaningful encounters.
The lotus flower is indeed beautiful
But its origins are murky and dirty.
Born from muddy waters, filthy and pitiful
It seems impossible for the lotus to be so pretty.
But the lotus flower itself is pure
And this contrast can represent our lives
We are all born in waters, murky and impure
But we can cleanse ourselves from the inside.
No matter who they are, everyone has potential
To rise above their dirty waters and bloom
But to firmly believe in yourself is essential
And your skills and talents can be groomed.
With such a mindset you should approach life
And you will find yourself closer to happiness
Knowing that you do not have to be divine
To achieve satisfaction and greatness.
