Islamic Proverb: The Fable Of The Porcupines

By Lauren Cho

There was once a winter so cold

All the animals shook and shivered.

Some porcupines thought to hold

Each other during the blizzard.

But the porcupines were very prickly

And their spikes hurt each other.

They all moved away quite quickly

But unfortunately, they weren’t much gladder.

When they all moved farther away

They lost the warmth of their bond.

So before they turned cold and gray

They huddled together all around.

Even though huddling hurt a little,

The porcupines were glad to be warm.

Some people may be blunt and brittle,

But love is what weathers the storm.

The porcupines learned familial love

Is worth the little troubles and pains.

Find relationships that fit like a glove

And see for yourself the warm gains.
